Simplicity 5167 Brenda's Trim Shirt Suit - Jacket & Skirt / ca. 1963

Simplicity 5167 Brenda's Trim Shirt Suit - Jacket & Skirt / ca. 1963- boxy and useful whether to wear to the office or a classy luncheon date with the girlfriends.  I favor the belted version myself - it's a bit plain but lots of ideas to spiff it up with a bold printed scarf.

Christmas is racing up to us.  Hope you are all through with shopping as it's all down hill from here.  No way will I risk the malls this weekend.  Going to hide at home and avoid all traffic and congestion and nuttiness.

A nice gentleman called me the other day after being referred by my web host.  He was branching out on his own business and wanted info on creating a website.  He has a novel idea that I found so fun.  He "etches" mirrors for personalizing businesses, college sports, kid's rooms, etc.  He has so many plans and ideas for expansion on the product.  Very cute idea so check him out if you are redoing your kid's room:  childrensmirror.com

Featured new is an awesome skirt pattern that I have in two sizes:  McCall's 5429 Dance Fever Skirt in Two Lengths 2007

Simplicity 1310 Bombshell Three-Piece Suit / ca. 1955

Simplicity 1310 Bombshell Three-Piece Suit / ca. 1955 with a superb side zipper opening for the blouse with a "faux" button flap in front.  Definitely a bombshell outfit with that nip waisted overblouse.

We are staying home this Christmas and planning on making some special dishes.  Harry's mom and two of her best friends who don't have family anywhere near here are coming to spend Christmas dinner with us.  Not sure what the main dish will be - I favor a "rack of pork loin" kind of like a rack of lamb with the same type of cut but pork.  One of my favorites.  Brush some seasoning on it and put it cooking slow on the BBQ - mmmm.  Christmas Eve will be the traditional Oyster Stew and spiked eggnog which will no doubt carry into Christmas Day.

Do you have any favorite or special or traditional foods you make or just enjoy!  Always looking for something new ...

Featured "new" is:   Vogue 8825 Breath of Fresh Air Jacket, Skirt & Pants 1993 with an outdoorsy long jacket and a nice swirly skirt - I note it's a bit "see thru" and the fabric suggestions say:  Challis, silk like crepe, silk like jacquard & georgette.

The pants are a nothing special but that nice jacket and skirt could sure set you apart from the crowd.

For the gift suggestion here is :  McCall's 9605 Quiet Time for Toddlers 25" Dolls & Clothes 1998 just for a young 'un who likes big huggable dolls.  For a quick sewer I think there's just enuf time ----

Simplicity 2345 Divine Shirtwaist Dress / ca. 1958

Featured vintage pattern is Simplicity 2345 Divine Shirtwaist Dress / ca. 1958 with or without pockets?  With of course.  I don't have the envelope for this one sadly.  It is uncut however and very rare.  I have waited for a couple of years for one to pop up somewhere on the internet so I could see what it looked like and finally yesterday one popped up.

I have been on a Christmas listing frenzy!  A nice gentleman contacted me not long ago and a family member who sewed had passed away and had so many great patterns he didn't want to throw away.  I bought them all "as a lump sum" and so many were craft patterns that I don't usually find.  With the gift giving season upon us I have been scanning like a madwoman.

Here is a link to all the crafty patterns I listed today:  Dolls, Toys & Bear Patterns

Here is a link to the Christmas patterns I put in today:  Christmas Patterns

I missed blogging yesterday so here is a link to Wednesday's patterns where there are also more crafty and Christmas goodies.

More doll patterns being put in tomorrow I hope.  Have a doctor appointment later today and that is just one of the bumps in the road to Christmas - grin.

Featured new is:  Burda 8090 Festive Skirt - Below Waist 2000's a very complimentary fitting skirt.  When I was recuperating from back surgery a few years ago I got hooked on What Not to Wear (if only I would use their advice on myself!) and this style of waist really is slimming in the tummy area.

I have been quite the domestic goddess this week.  Made a home made chili (quite spicy!) yesterday, and also made raisin bread in the bread machine.  Today's menu is home made beef stew.  Okay too much red meat LOL but it's finally cold here and chili and stew and soups are hitting the spot.

Featured new is a very popular McC Old West Brand design from McCall's:  McCall's 7123 Wonderful Western Shirt for Men & Women 1994.  Usually my friend Sandra zaps onto this design lickety split but not as of now.  Even if she does snatch it I have another one on the way in the same sizes, so if it's gone when you click over check back in about a week.  If you like this style check out the other McC Old West Brand Patterns I have.

Gift Idea:  Instead of a Snuggie this is much more useful!  Vogue 9731 Comfy Fleece Unisex Top & Pants 1997 for men and women and comes in all sizes.  Great to open a gift that you can put on right away on a cold Christmas morning.

Okay here's the skinny on the sale starting tomorrow:   Use Coupon Code OFF2GLAMIS which I will put in late tonight.  So if you are in a different time zone or stay up late you can get a jump on the 20% off sale!    We leave tomorrow and will be back on Sunday.  All paid orders, as usual, ship Monday or Tuesday.

Something a little different today for featured pattern:  Vogart 132 Gay & Practical Motifs for Dresses, Blouses, Hats, Bags, Etc. / circa 1940's one of two transfer patterns from the 1940's I put in today.  This is a beauty.

Obtained an interesting old sewing booklet that has such a pretty cover:  Singer Sewing Library No. 2 How to Make Dresses the Modern Singer Way 1932 and I know that Singer came out with "sets" of these booklets.  Wish I had the whole set!  Not sure how useful the info is being so dated but the booklet would make a nice pretty addition to any sewing book collection.

Featured "new" is : Butterick 5818 Guest of Honor Top & Skirt 1998 available in plus size only.  Just an amazing top with offset closure.

Simplicity 4770 Sharp as a Tack Suit / Jacket & Skirt / ca. 1963

Truly a stunner is this suit pattern I just listed:  Simplicity 4770 Sharp as a Tack Suit / Jacket & Skirt / ca. 1963.  Does it not remind you of the suit Jackie wore when President Kennedy was shot?  Maybe it's just the color - that day and the days following are crystal clear in my mind.  If you were old enough, or had been born at all by then, you will never forget where you were when you first heard.

Don't forget to check in tomorrow for sale info.  Camping trip on schedule to start Thursday.  It will be for 15% off regular but 20% off just for you readers!

The featured new is from the McCall's NY The Collection line - always a favorite of mine:  McCall's 8151 Wonderous Wispy Dress & Slip 1996 - definitely a dreamy beauty.

Starting today I'm going to put in holiday gift ideas for Christmas:  Simplicity 9054 Charming Decorated Dress or Jumper, Skirt & Jacket 1989 a loose and easy style that encourages decoration - make it personal for a loved one or make it festive with a Christmas theme on it for yourself.

Simplicity 6403 Feminine Two-Piece Dress 1966

A simple addition of a double breasted boxy look to the top on this pattern Simplicity 6403 Feminine Two-Piece Dress 1966 turns blase to beauty!  The longer "belted" look would be very complimentary for someone needing a longer leaner look.

In my wanderings I found some fun sites about the 1950's fashion:  The Fifties Index has absolutely everything including music, cars, fashion not only about dresses but shoes, purses you name it!  Nostalgic for sure.

I'll be making it a short week for listing and blogging.  We are going camping on Thursday so look for a sale posting on Wednesday to start on Thursday!

The featured "new" is so truly "becoming" -
Simplicity 7955 Very Becoming Dress with Scalloped Neckline 1997 and one of the prettiest I have listed in a long time IMO.

The holidays are coming up and with the economy being so bad it's important that we take care of each other - our family, friends and even strangers who are having to tighten their belts.  I encourage everyone to pick a local charity that is struggling (they are all struggling actually) and donate even a few dollars or your time to help.  I just read that a wonderful charity in Colorado has lost it's federal funding because they require that women who use their service attend a bible study course.  Whether you agree or not is not the question but the necessity of keeping their doors open is important.  If you are looking for a charity they are so very worthy:  Liza's Place Gospel Shelter

Marian Martin 9220 Mary's Out Shopping Blouse & Slacks 1960's

Marian Martin 9220 Mary's Out Shopping Blouse & Slacks 1960's is one of those patterns that brings to mind, actually makes me visualize, the 1960's.  I swear I wore this outfit in my mid-teens.  Oops - dating myself.  The 60's really had some great fashion trends that haven't even begun to go out of style - like this combo.  Add a pair of matching tennies and a purse and start cruising the malls.  More Marian Martin Patterns

The featured new is :  McCall's 5050 Frothy Peasant Top & Tunic 2006 a very romantic Renaissance looking blouse.  I have it in all sizes luckily.

In my never ending quest for research of listings I ran across a blogsite called SewCraftful which I could never hope to compete with - oh my gosh who has the time??!!   Just lucky for us they do - they have many neat articles but the one that caught my eye was How to Value Vintage Sewing Patterns.  This is such an accurate description of what I do to evaluate vintage or even newer patterns.  I never just find a pattern, scan it, edit it, and list it.  Every single one is researched thoroughly.  Definitely more time consuming but it gives you the buyer more info too.  If I say it is scarce or rare you can be certain that at the time I list it is.  Often after 8 or 10 months I reevaluate a pattern's worth and either delete it or relist it at a lesser price to move the product.

Simplicity 3070 Slim & Trim Roll Collar Dress / ca. 1959

Okay Sale is On!
We are heading out late today and will be back late Sunday.  All paid orders will go Monday or Tuesday.  You readers will get 20% off by using coupon code REST4ME which really means I am going to sleep, nap, and generally be lazy the whole, entire, time.  Bringing lots of books I have wanted to read, my little laptop DVD player and my headphones.  Oh and of course the kitties.  They tolerate the trip (they actually don't dig traveling at all but they do it) but once we are there they enjoy looking out the window at all the activity.

Of course I will have my IPad with me to stay in touch thru email and to answer any questions you may have.  Camping just ain't what it used to be - but then I won't give up my queen size bed and walk in shower or my internet or cell phone just to sleep in the dirt again with a tent.

Simplicity 3070 Slim & Trim Roll Collar Dress / ca. 1959- so stylish.  If Erin of Dressaday was writing about this pattern I wonder what she would say about the two ladies who are staring daggers but not at each other?  Occasionally I get such a giggle out of a pattern I send it to Erin to enjoy - not that this is exceptional but it did make me wonder.

Featured new is McCall's 6277 Flouncy Fancy Dress & Belt 2011- definitely a big splashy print for this dress.  Bit exotic - tropical type flowers in a silky fabric.  The kind of material that skims your figure when you walk or even move.  Very Sixties Sex Symbol looking.

Simplicity 7009 Stylish Two-Piece Jiffy Dress 1967

Just put this one in today:  Simplicity 7009 Stylish Two-Piece Jiffy Dress 1967 with a bit of a "suit" look to it.  The pink view is just plain distinguished.

Someone sent me the attached link that is just so funny.  Cows are so dummmmmbbbb!  Rawhide Round 'Em Up

We are going to have a long weekend "vacation" starting on Wednesday.  It's been so long since we've gotten together with our camping buddies because of summer but our first "winter" trip since last April is this weekend.  We are going out Wednesday night and will be back Sunday afternoon.  A 15% off sale will go on starting Thursday for regular customers but it be 20% for you readers.  I will put the link in on Wedneday morning for you!  Nothing will get mailed until the following Monday or Tuesday.  As always will have an internet connection to keep in touch.

The new pattern is one I had before and it got snatched up quickly - McCall's 7077 Extraordinary Loose-Fitted Shirt 1994.  It's a shirt but ... well better than that.  This is one I wish I had found fifty of as it seems to be very popular.

Simplicity 2261 Extra Special Dress with Tiered "Bustle" / ca. 1947

Simplicity 2261 Extra Special Dress with Tiered "Bustle" / ca. 1947 - a Truly Teen pattern with a great "nipped" waist, and tiered "bustle" affect.  If you are tiny or have a teen who is into retro fashions this could be a winner.  Though the envelope is awful the pattern itself is uncut.  Lucky me - lucky someone.

Am I the only one who remembers Sea Monkeys?  Remember getting those when you were a kid?  I didn't find out until an adult that they were actually brine shrimp.  Found that out when we lived at Mono Lake and a friend harvested the brine shrimp.  We had all the sea monkeys we could catch.  If you feel nostalgic check out the Sea Monkey Worship Page for a giggle.

The featured new is:  Vogue 7012 Tasty Tapered Dress with Wrap Overlays 1999 and don't you just drool over that wrap bodice?!  I find it very unique - at first I thought it was a shirt or jacket that went over the dress.  Fooled me -

Vogue 9243 Priceless Full Skirt with Optional "Apron" Front 1957

Two featured today oh I can't decide - maybe because that blouse and skirt could go together.
Vogue 9243 Priceless Full Skirt with Optional "Apron" Front 1957 and Design 884 Mischief Maker Wrap Halter Top 1950's both very rare.  And both have never been used - can't figure that one out.

Featured new today is:  McCall's 2473 Loose Fitted Coat or Jacket 1999 and it is suitable for fleece.  Cool weather is here in some parts of the U.S. but soon to be winter and this would be an inexpensive item to make.  Not rare or hard to find but so useable.

Mail Order 9236 Dignified Day Dress 1960's

Can't Look Away - Mail Order 9236 Dignified Day Dress 1960's and don't the gloves just "make" the outfit?  Afraid I just can't do it - does anyone even wear gloves anymore except in the winter?  When we lived in the "snow belt" with temperatures below zero I still couldn't take wearing gloves especially when driving a car.  Had to put up with it until the car was warmed up and it was irritating.  Anyone out there still wearing gloves?

Had a lovely conversation with a new customer yesterday who used to live in Arizona but now lives in New Hampshire.  What a difference in weather for sure.  She encouraged me to check out a site with chapters in Yuma called SASS - Single Action Shooting Society who put on "shows" and competitions.  She bought some western period costume patterns.  They must put on quite a show.  Will have to check into their events.  Looks like fun.

We leave this evening for a quick trip to SoCal to visit my sister and her husband.  He's having a rough time doing both chemo and radiation and needs to be cheered up for sure.  My husband could make a Buckingham Palace Guard spit out water with laughter.  Wish us luck.

Featured new is McCall's 5396 Great Looking Jacket, Skirt & Pants 2007 with a very nice combo.  Lovely asymmetrical hem skirt and a neat jacket that fastens in the back.  I think that would complement a figure - showing a waist.

Simplicity 4221 Rockin' Housecoat, Brunchcoat or Tunic & Pants / ca. 1962

Simplicity 4221 Rockin' Housecoat, Brunchcoat or Tunic & Pants / ca. 1962 and why are the greatest most fun patterns in such tiny sizes arrrgggghhhhh!  Oh well even if it was my size being short I would look like an umbrella in this.

I just had a call from a new customer who mentioned an interesting pattern site called "Laughing Moon" which is located in Sacramento, California.  Very unique patterns all "historical" and they even have period clothing.  Their patterns are so authentic looking.  If you are into Old West or that type of pattern for costuming or event check them out.

Also wanted to pass on a website that carries women's products called Ahava - I have used their products and am addicted to them.  Especially the sun block as it works extra good here in sunny AZ.  Moisturizers, make-up you name it.  Every area on your body has a product!

Featured new is:  McCall's 5816 Waifish Jumpsuit & Dress 1992 which is not only dang cute but I have in just about every size right now.  Yay!  I might have even put this in as a favorite new a few days or weeks ago but when I got a bunch of other sizes wanted to make sure anybody who liked it had a chance.

Butterick 5374 Lady of Leisure Housecoat or Brunch Coat / ca. 1950

Butterick 5374 Lady of Leisure Housecoat or Brunch Coat / ca. 1950 - a concept that I don't think is happening today.  Today we wear robes.  Such a shame.  But then not being wealthy or hanging with the elite maybe they still wear these!  Jumping out of bed to an alarm, getting my husband's lunch together, toast for breakfast, making coffee and starting my "job" I know that poor housecoat would have coffee or butter stains the first morning - oh and not to forget all that cat hair.

Check out the Kwik Sew men's briefs pattern I put in yesterday.  I kept thinking "who would wear this?" - the one on the right reminds me of a man's thong and can't be comfortable.  Maybe it's a jock strap!  Kwik Sew 2224 Men's Hunky Briefs 1992

Featured new is McCall's 4051 Cut In Armhole Dress - a Beauty! 2003 which I have two of in different sizes.

I've had numerous customers say how hard it is to find good fabric today.  Nancy gave me a website that has some awesome fabric that I thought you might want to check out.  I'm sure there are numerous sites out there with lots of great and unique fabric - so if you know of any and want to share with me so I can spread the word email me at risingfeenix@yahoo.com and I will post the sites.  Here is the site:  Whittle's Fabrics

One of my customs has a very intriguing business name I couldn't resist looking up - Wee Scotty and okay Lynne I am so impressed!

She has a fashion school for kids to teach them how to sew and much more.  I encourage you to peruse her site I know you will enjoy it.

Sewing is such a lost art.  While finding patterns at thrift stores or swap meets people always ask "what do you do with those?" or even "what are those?" and when I explain they look confused.  Come on people!  Clothes don't magically appear on the racks - someone has to make them.  I know you readers have passed your skills on and bless you for that.

Butterick 4859 Amazing Little Flare-Back Jacket / ca. 1949

We are having some old friends visit this week (they are coming Wednesday) that we've known for 30+ years (of course we were babies when we first met them - yeah right LOL).  Need to get my house and the "guest house" ready for company so TIME FOR A SALE!  I wanted to take the whole week off and not think about business (other than emails) since we are going to be gone most of the time either at the river or just showing them around.  So for you readers 20% OFF FROM RIGHT NOW UNTIL Sunday Night at Midnight.  Use coupon code OLDFRIENDS and hope you find some fun stuff!

No more listings either onsite or here I am truly taking a "vacation" and will list again next Monday!

Yesterday had some very special stuff listed and so the featured vintage pattern is a most charming one: Butterick 4859 Amazing Little Flare-Back Jacket / ca. 1949

Just the kind of little jacket that goes great with a pair of jeans even -

When researching a pattern today ran across an interesting site "The Shirtdress:  A Curated History" - interesting stuff and some great pictures too.  One of the ones featured is one I found that will go in next week.

Featured "New" is Vogue 1984 Delightful Dress with Raised Waist / circa 1980's that is raised waist but just has a "different" style to it.  It's not a maternity though I thought so at first - but sure could do the trick.

Butterick 1390 Fetching Gathered Bodice Frock / ca. 1941

Butterick 1390 Fetching Gathered Bodice Frock / ca. 1941 - just adore the bodice with that smooth yoke and then the gathers beneath it.   Don't you just love patterns with writing on the envelope!  Well unless it's just junky - often it's a name or a comment.  Now this one has me baffled - I swear it says "poke out" - huh?  Ohhhh Wait - I just relooked and it says "Poka Dut" which I gather means "Polka Dot" - okay they could sew but not spell.  We all have our niches in life.  Too funny -

Nancy rules!  Here's another fun site entitled "Tampon Crafts for any time of the month" - gotta see it.  People will find something to do with anything.  Before seeing this site I would have said "almost anything" but this truly stretches my imagination.  But I will pass on any of these crafts.  In my BM days (Before Menopause) how many times did I (and I am sure you can relate) pull out my wallet to pay for something and have a tampon fly out.  Countless - I still have nightmares.

Two newer features today (couldn't decide - they are both awesome).

First is - Butterick 6857 Free Spirted Dress, Top & Pants 1993 a "so me" fashion - makes me want to throw on those pants and long vest and top and head for a swap meet.  Bring along my "old lady" cart - you know the kind that annoy you if someone else has one but you love it and spend the day scrounging for treasures.  Any of you who live in SoCal go to the Rose Bowl or Vet Stadium swap meets? I'd go almost every month when I lived there with my mom - okay I don't dare go there I'll get all weepy.

Second is - Simplicity 6287 Play Time "Apron" Dress with Wrap Ties 1994 which I have had before and it always flew out of stock.  This time I have two!  So if you like it grab it quick.

Hollywood 544 Glamorous Movie Star Nightdress / ca. 1940 is the featured vintage pattern today.  I only found one other on the internet and it was priced so dang high.  Okay this one is very high too but that other one has me beat - honestly!  I got five Hollywood Sewing Patterns the other day and they are all of this quality.  They don't look like they have ever been used.  Absolutely perfect as the day they were bought.  So rare for this quality.  So very "Jean Harlow" looking.

Can't resist putting this more recent "vintage" pattern in too because it is a bit "different" - McCall's 3162 Feel the Beat Dress & Dance Pants 1972.  Dance pants? Sadly it's for a tiny person - why couldn't it be a normal size?  Okay I am just jealous remembering my Size 6 days.

I've been meaning to encourage you readers to be good Girl Scouts and "Be Prepared" - seeing the images of people scrambling for supplies at the last minute during the latest hurricane brought to memory my years of living in blizzard country and being literally snowed in.  Avalanches cut us off and we were without power for nearly 4 days one time.  In December - 20's outside.  We were 7 miles from the nearest town of 300 people and 45 miles from a real city.  But because of our locale we were always extra prepared with lots of extra food, both frozen and canned.  We even had a generator thank God.  Our neighbors who didn't have one brought most of their perishables over to our refrigerator or put it outside in ice chests and they spent alot of time at our house watching TV and doing anything they needed to do that required power.  Since we all had wood stoves heat wasn't a problem.  Now that we live in Yuma snow isn't a problem but we've had earthquakes and power outages due to thunderstorms.  Not a good thing when it's 118 outside and no AC.  Our generator gives us a feeling of relief just for that "what if" moment.  We have a huge pantry and if something happened we know we would get by for quite a long time.  Could you?  Don't put off stocking up a bit "just in case" - it would be so unnerving to be struggling last minute to buy food and water with other people frantically pushing you out of the way.  Be the one who stays home and doesn't have to worry.

Okay 'nuf scary stuff.  The featured "new" pattern today is Vogue 7011 Closet Organizers - Get Organized Today! 1999 a somewhat hard to find pattern.  I've seen lots of closet organizers and this is my favorite.  If you are like me every few months I get a bee up my butt and rearrange closets because I can't find my favorite purse or hat.  Now this is getting me inspired to do it again - grin.

McCall's 6071 Figure Enhancing Dress 1961

This style is so definitive of that period - nothing frilly or exagerated just "plain" but not plain at all.  This style will accentuate curves if they are in the right places - grin.  If you like this style here are some more 1960's Sheath Dress Patterns
Cooler weather here at last.  It was 71 degrees this morning.  By this weekend I will be able to go outside and do some yard work.  Yay.  Lots of wind and thunderstorms lately so even though all the leaves have blown away it evens out or makes it worse when everyone else's leaves are in my yard.  It will be nice to be able to sit on the patio again without starting to smoke (not cigarettes!) and let's not forget starting a vegetable garden using "Square Foot Gardening" methods.  Nothing like fresh veggies.

Featured new:  McCall's 3093 Out of the Ordinary Jacket, Top, Skirt & Drawstring Pants 2001 right up my alley to throw on and hit the swap meet or walk the boardwalk at the beach on a cool morning.  Looks just so comfortable yet "today" - sure do like the McCall's NY The Collection Patterns!
